Marriage Customs

It is often said that marriages are made in Heaven, and therefore, a suitable partner is very much of a necessity so as to lead a very happy and satisfied life. We often witness two types of Marriages, mainly, love marriages and arranged marriages. In love marriage, two adults decide to involve themselves in the holy bond of matrimony, and in the other the families of the groom and the bride, or the third parties, a very active role in determining the match. In earlier days arranged marriages were the norm, but recent times have seen a surge of love marriages. Marriage Customs vary according to the religion, society and region the bride and the groom belongs to. Western customs of marriage is not similar to eastern customs of Marriage, and vice versa.

Christian Marriage Customs are vastly different to Hindu or Muslim Marriage Customs. Traditional Marriages follow different Marriage Customs to registry marriages. However, most of these Marriage Customs adheres to the norms of the society and religion.

But the primary duties of the bride and the groom towards each other and towards society remains the same. They are endowed with great responsibility and duties. Marriage Customs are just means to an end, the end being equal in all religions. In many religions there is the custom of fasting before marriage. This is specially noted in Hindu marriages, where both the bride and the groom have to fast for a certain period of time before the wedding ceremony. In Christian marriages, the bride and the groom have to take a pledge or oath that they will take care of each other as long as they live. Many religions think that Marriage is symbolical to the relationship of God and the people. But marriage is more a relationship of trust and belief from both the sides.

In some societies, polygamy is still practiced. But in most civilized societies, the custom of polygamy is banned legally. Monogamy is the only form of marriage in most of the parts of the world. Hindu Marriage Customs are innumerable in number, and it starts from the very night of the ceremony of “mehendi”. Most of these customs have to be carried out by the bride rather than the groom. The families of both the bride and the groom have to strictly adhere to these Marriage Customs. Otherwise, the marriage is not considered to be legal in the eyes of society, and especially in a country like India, social sanction is necessary to lead a happy life free of worries.

There are also some legal customs that are to be kept in mind during the ceremony of Marriage. Marriage Customs are interpreted differently in different religions and societies, but the core is the same. Marriage gives rise to a bond of love that is one of the most precious bonds in the life of two human beings. The elders in the family usually keep an account of all the Marriage Customs while the young ones enjoy the occasion.
